lyrics

I am carving spaces for you with the knives I’ve made of my hands
Clawing at my shoulders so that you can find a home in them;
I wrote your invitation in blood from chapped lips and ripped nail beds
The quiet plans that linger through the day
Rather than the ones that bark to be let out
They can wait for open doors
This is for the carvings and the holes revealed by shucking down my core
Somehow
I have managed
To fashion mansions in my pores
Steeped hotels into the desert pattern cracks of skin
And somehow
I am still waiting for you to move in
To go deep into me where all the nicest spaces are
I ripped up old residencies and made their floorboards into ceiling beams
I took the time to repair with spackling what pushpin ghosts were left
And waited
And I am still waiting, with these worlds
For you to choose to make a home in these blueprints of me;
Get familiar with all the light switches, the drawers and cupboards,
Where I keep the scissors for the old bits and magnets for new

But you stay at the threshold,
Always look at me from windows you can’t pass through
And I carve these spaces, always with these bladed hands of mine that beckon you.

Laid to rest eternally.
